International Human rights Activist Mr Anthony Kwabena Rau suggested that the government must impose a price control to ensure uniformity in the prices of goods in Ghana.

In a chat on SVTV AFRICA, Mr Rau indicated that the government must intervene to protect consumers and promote market stability. The Germany-based Ghanaian revealed that the German government imposed a Controlled Price Mechanism (CPM) to prevent sellers from doubling the price of a product.

“In Germany, prices increase too, and the sellers reduce it when prices drop too. Sometimes, the prices drop lower than it was before. The German FDA makes sure that the seller doesn’t make a 200% profit on a product.

No one would buy from such sellers, and they’ll be forced to reduce the price. The Ghana government is cheating the citizens. There must be a price control, otherwise low-income earners will always suffer,” Mr Rau said.

Moreover, the former German member of parliament advised Ghanaians to file tax returns. Simply put, tax returns mean taxpayers calculate their tax liability or request refunds for the overpayment of taxes.

Anthony Rau added that if Ghanaians file for tax returns, the government “will think twice about the taxes imposed on goods because they would have to pay back at the end of the year. If I buy the goods with high taxes, I can claim at least 30% back. It is here, but many citizens do not know. I file tax returns in Ghana every year.”
