UK-based Ghanaian Nelson Obeng has shared a hilarious experience of how he traveled to Tunisia with Gari, a ball of Kenkey, and GHs2 in his pocket.

In a chat on Daily Hustle Worldwide, he embarked on the journey to gain some travel experience before moving to the UK to join his family. According to Nelson, he was so broke that he had to give out his passport as collateral for a hotel room in Sousse, Tunisia.

According to Nelson, he had about 40gh before he left Ghana. He gave most of it to his girlfriend and the rest as transport to Kotoka airport.

“We traveled as a group, so I thought they had paid for the hotel. When I got to the hotel booked for me, the hotel receptionist said I had to pay 60 dinars (Ghs147) first. How do I pay for the room with GHs2” he asked rhetorically.

Nelson mentioned that he even joined a gang to smoke cigarettes to find a place to sleep. Meanwhile, he had never smoked before.

“Thankfully, the hotel receptionist offered me a room in exchange for my passport as collateral. I did not want to, but I might have to sleep outside. The next day, my colleagues joined me and paid for the hotel,” he added.

After his two-cedi-trip to Tunisia, he joined his family in the UK the year after.

Speaking on life in the UK, Nelson disclosed that he worked a 12-hour shift for two jobs simultaneously.

“It almost killed me. Back then, I needed the money badly, but I stopped.”
