Legendary highlife musician, Rex Omar has likened the practice whereby some people use songs belonging to musicians without due diligence to forcefully having sex with a woman.

He revealed that those who use songs in their promo adverts or do cover versions of songs without contacting the originator are raping the owners of their intellectual property.

‘Didadadidi’ hit maker, Rex Omar made these emphatic statements whilst speaking on the subject of copyright in an exclusive interview with Dr Spice on Kingdom FM in Cape Coast monitored by MyNewsGh.com

‘If you’re doing an advert on Radio or TV and you want a particular song to used at the background, the company whose brand is involved must first seek the approval of the musician who did that song.

“If you’re an artiste who wants to do a remix or cover version of a song, you’d first of all need clearance from the appropriate quarters before going ahead with it.

“Don’t assume that you’re doing it in honour of the originator so you don’t need their permission. Maybe the originator doesn’t want the song to be altered or does not want to be associated with the brand that wants to use their intellectual property.

“Using a song without following the due diligence is like raping a musician of the hard earned intellectual property. Just like to forcefully have sex with a woman without her consent and that’s a crime”.

Rex Omar won GH¢200,000 in damages against Joy Industries Ltd after five years of prolonged litigation following the usage of his song titled ‘Didadadidi’ in an advert without his permit.
