Francis, a Ghanaian currently living in the UAE, left Ghana in February 2025 in search of work. He was previously an IT technician and moved to the Arab country with the hope of earning 1,000 dirhams monthly. Having lived in Qatar before, he believed the offer was genuine. However, upon arrival, the company informed him they could not pay the promised amount.
At the time, Francis owed GHC 18,000 in Ghana and planned to use one year of work abroad to settle the debt. Unfortunately, instead of the promised job, he and his colleagues were assigned to general labor in waste management. They were sometimes sent to weed using hoes and, on other occasions, to warehouses for menial tasks.
The job proved very difficult. Out of the three Ghanaians who traveled together, some could not endure the work and left. Francis endured for three months, working overtime, but when he received his salary, it amounted to only 666 dirhams. He realized that if he had done similar work in Ghana, he could have earned more than that.
By the fourth month, he had been reassigned, and after five months, he requested sick leave and canceled his contract. The company then informed him that his agent should have arranged for his return ticket to Ghana. He hoped to return home with at least GHC 5,000. Someone in Germany even offered to buy him a ticket, but the arrangement was canceled.
Now, Francis has been given 29 days to leave the UAE, or he risks overstaying.
