W/R: Muslim Jummah prayers postponed by four weeks

Muslims in the Western Region have been directed to halt any preparation of holding prayers later today, Friday, June, 05.

The directive, according to the Western Region Chief Imam, Sheik Uztaz Elias Alhassan is to allow various mosques prepare well to meet the safety and hygiene protocols.

He therefore stated that Friday prayer be held at homes for the next four weeks.

“Western Region has seen some spike in cases, and we increase the number of cases day in and day out. Even yesterday, the region recorded almost hundred cases. So based on that the Regional Zongo Chief, Regional Chief Imam, and Council of Muslim Chiefs agreed to put on hold the Jummah prayers for four weeks and prepare for the directives,” Sheik Uztaz Elias Alhassan said.

President Akufo Addo in his 10th address to the nation of the fight against COVID-19 on Sunday eased restrictions on churches, mosques and the universities to reopen this week.

The Minister for Religious Affairs addressing a press conference on Monday evening stated that any church or mosque or other religious bodies that violate the laid down protocols will be dealt with severely.

“Ablution should be performed in the house by adherents before entering the mosque. Use easily removal footwear such as slippers. Allow people to come out of the mosque to collect slippers one after the other instead of crowding at the entrance. Sanitize microphones immediately after use.”
