Deborah Jessica Oppong, a Ghanaian entrepreneur and university graduate, is encouraging young people to start businesses in Ghana instead of waiting for opportunities abroad. Speaking on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Ghana with DJ Nyaami, she shared how she started her egg distribution business and now mentors others to do the same.
Deborah explained that having a university degree is not the end goal but rather the beginning of one’s journey in life.
“Most Ghanaians think success starts after getting a job with your degree, but that’s not the only way. I never planned to be an employee. My dream has always been to build my own business,” she said.
She revealed that she participated in a Mastercard Foundation training program, which gave her the skills and confidence to start her own ventures
“There are so many opportunities in Ghana — you just have to search for them. Through the Mastercard Foundation training, I learned how to plan, research, and take action,” Deborah explained.
According to her, one key step in starting a business is market research.
“Don’t rush. Study your market, know your target customers, and think carefully before starting. Even when things get challenging, don’t give up — learn from others’ mistakes,” she advised.
Deborah emphasized the importance of discipline and financial management, saying not every business requires huge capital.
“If you don’t know how to manage money, you’ll waste any capital you get. It’s not every business that needs big money to start — sometimes you just need creativity and consistency,” she said.
She also cautioned against sharing business ideas with the wrong people.
“If your friends look down on you, don’t tell them your plans. Some will discourage you or even steal your ideas,” she warned
Through networking, Deborah got her first big business deal.
“A friend connected me to a company, and I ended up buying 1,000 crates of eggs. Sales have been very good since then,” she said proudly.
Today, Deborah runs a mentorship program where she trains others to enter the egg distribution business.
“I teach people how to start even without capital, how to manage the business properly, and how to sell in large quantities for better profit margins,” she explained.
She concluded with a message to Ghanaian youth:
“Don’t wait for a miracle or travel abroad to make it. Start small where you are. If you’re good at what you do, opportunities will come.
